Dark tranquillity – video showreel 2012

For the past four years, I’ve created video projections for Dark tranquillity. Thanks to the usage of a click track for samples and drum tempos, the footage can be 100% synchronized with the music, allowing the use of time matched keywords and animations that accentuate the rhythms and changes of the particular songs. The challenge is to create a good balance between the simple and complex, the visceral and cerebral. Most motion graphics techniques are used; animating and compositing still images originally created for CD covers/layouts, timelapse painting in Alchemy/Painter, custom photo/film work, 3D, stock video integration and so forth.

Needless to say, one should visit the live show in order to get the full experience. The video backdrop is but one component of the gig, intended to accentuate the performance and provide a complementary experience to the music and lyrics. For this reason, the showreel above doesn’t show any of the full-song animations but a very small sample set to a seperate piece of music.

Dark tranquillity – In my absence

Dark tranquillity’s “In my absence” video is now released. I wanted to create a live video that would capture the energy of our show both from the audience’s perspective as well as from the stage.

To accomplish this, we headed out on our recent Europe/Russia tours equipped with a GoPro HD camera, which was mounted on various objects (guitar necks, vocal microphone, member’s bodies etc.) on most of the shows.

Despite probably looking pretty weird for those in the crowd that noticed the little device, we arrived home with a lot of interesting footage, and after a lot of editing we’re happy to present the final result: A clip for ‘In My Absence’, filled with an energy and closeness out of the ordinary. Enjoy!

Dark tranquillity – WATV tour edition

The tour edition of “We are the void” – which among a lot of other other stuff features the “Zero distance” and “Iridium” videos – comes in a nifty DVD inspired packaging. Visuals from the aforementioned videos were re-worked and used as the foundation for the design. Here are some samples.
